Time to Speak! But How?

It’s easy, right? You’re in a meeting or listening to someone in a conversation and suddenly feel the need to respond or say something…Assuming it’s appropriate and the right thing to do (that, in itself, is an important decision – probably a good subject for another post), you just say it, right?

Before we jump into action, let’s pause to think. If you’ve made the decision to speak, I want to encourage you to consider that you have another important decision to make – it’s how you speak.

I know the feeling and it sounds something like this…

  • Oh, I’ve got just one more phone call to make, then I can…
  • I first need to organize XYZ…
  • I need to first think about it more and have a better plan…
  • I need to find my notes and rewrite them so…
  • Next week I’m sure it’ll be clearer so…

What’s the problem? You’re talking yourself out of starting something really important. It’s not that you doubt you should do it. You just can’t get going…right? Am I alone? No, I don’t think so.
