Blue Jolt: Personal Leadership as a Test for Leading Others

Hoping for change, but continuing to do things the way you’ve always done them, doesn’t work. “Blue Jolts” are potent tidbits intended to give your brain the necessary jolt (and excuse) to “jump the tracks,” challenge what you’re doing and find better ways to make great things happen.

Nothing so conclusively proves a man’s ability to lead others as what he does from day to day to lead himself.

  1. What are some personal “day-to-day” habits you have observed in great leaders?
  2. Which ones are most important?
  3. Which day-to-day personal leadership habits do you need to work on most? (remember, if you’re not working on moving forward, you’re likely going backward).

  1. Effective in communicating
    Admitting when they are wrong
    Respect….even when the people they lead don’t agree
    Trust
    Consistency
    Goal/vision oriented

    I think trust is maybe the highest quality to have. Example: You will easily pay someone more to fix your car if you can trust them. Trust takes time to earn and I think good leaders must have to be effective in the other habits of leadership.

    I need more consistentcy and have higher goals for myself so I don’t go “backwards” or drive in neutral.

    1. Thanks EM for sharing. It’s a very solid list of core leadership habits. Putting them to work day-to-day is the challenge. I could not agree more that “trust” is the bedrock of leadership. Without this, nothing else really matters.

      Regarding your personal areas of focus – I think the challenge is to make sure the vision stays motivating and not “oppressive.” Finding ways to make it inspiring & desirable vs. dauting & scary is key.
